Propitiation

ACCUSED, I STAND ALONE before the judge,

Trembling as I hear the lawyer scoff

To list my crimes: the filth, the muck, the sludge,

Right down to hidden stains I can't wipe off.

How can I plead? I'm guilty of each charge.

I am undone! The accusing counsel sneers

At my distress, my obvious guilt writ large

Upon my face. Surrounded by the jeers

Of the disgusted crowd I hide my head.

Worse than the guilt is its attendant Shame,

Which strips me bare. But what is this? Instead

Of bearing scorn, I scoff myself. My blame

Rests on his naked shoulders!—

My judge, who

Himself hangs on my gallows, breathes, "For you.”
